16:35-18:00 THE MELILLA MASSACRE

The massacre at the Melilla fence in June 2022 put the Spanish media to the test, as they were caught between the official news silence and a large number of videos, photographs and testimonies showing unconscious, injured or dead migrants and denouncing brutality and illegal actions by the Spanish police.

In this panel we will talk about the challenges of the immediate coverage of this event, and the subsequent work of investigation and reconstruction of the events carried out by a group of international journalists.

Migrant women often enter the care work sector upon arrival in the destination country. News coverage of these stories requires particular care, because these women often carry with them stories of abandonment, violence or some kind of abuse, but also because for those who frequently cover these stories, the emotional charge can resonate on a personal level.
